Baker Heavy & Highway uses 5130B Cat Mass Excavator to Move the Mountains
The 5130B Mass Excavator (like the one pictured) is currently eating away at blasted rock along route 15 near Blossburg to make way for a new four lane highway. An estimated 5 million cubic yards of earth is to be moved on this section of the highway. The excavator weighs in at a mere 401,000 lbs, but still has two bigger brothers of the same configuration. Approximately 15 shovels full of earth by this 13.8 yard bucket would make a hole big enough for a large swimming pool. Fuel consumption up to 37 gallons per hour doesn't take long to empty the 687 gallon tank.

The 777D Cat truck loaded by the 5130B excavator hauls away 100 tons of the blasted rock to needed locations. Four of the trucks are currently making the haul with several more to be added as the project develops. The 938hp. engine has to haul a combined weight of over 350,000 lbs., and can travel at speeds of over 37 mph empty. Caterpillar is building a 360 ton payload truck that will become available in the next few years.
